Broken.
When you think about being broken, who comes to mind?
A friend down the street dealing with a prodigal child…?
A neighbor struggling with their marriage…?
A family member struggling with addiction…?
A personal issue you are struggling with…?
Who do you think about in the Bible?
Job after everything was taken from him including his
health…?
Habakkuk when he cried out to God over of the injustice and
violence in Judah?
How about Jeremiah, he was called the weeping prophet
because he often shared his deep sorrow over the sin of God’s people...
How do we handle things when they are broken?
How do we handle things when we are broken?
We need to look at something bigger than us. That is what Job, Habakkuk, and every other
prophet and person in scripture did. If
we can’t look at something bigger than us, we will succumb to the storms around
us. Let me give you an example.
When a person is drowning, the lifeguard sometimes stays at
a distance and sends a flotation device to the victim because it is considered safer
for both. The victim feels alone at that
moment and doesn’t realize the lifeguard is actually doing an act of
compassion. The lifeguard knows what is best for that person because of years
of training. The victim only knows his
or her surroundings at the moment.
Job didn’t understand the big picture. God didn’t owe him an explanation. God was GOD and in the last chapter of
Job, he accepted that reality and was able to accept that fact. Sometimes we don’t get the answer why. We just need to trust HIM in the
process. We need to know GOD is GOD
and get out of His way and His plans. If we understood all of the plans, and knew
better than GOD… Then we would be greater than GOD… WE ARE NOT.
We need to accept and trust…
'Then Job answered
the Lord and said: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of
yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for
me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you
make it known to me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my
eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” '
Job 42:1-6
Habakkuk, after crying out to the Lord, came to terms
knowing that God is Sovereign and even though he didn’t see the results, he
would still TRUST IN GOD. We can
still trust in God because He does not give up on His plans for us. Even when we don’t see the fruit of the tree
yet. REJOICE TODAY! Knowing that He who began a good work in you will
complete it!
'Though the fig
tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive
fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there
be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in
the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like
the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places. To the choirmaster: with
stringed instruments.'
Habakkuk 3:17-19
How about us? Are we
trying to hold onto something that we don’t understand? Are you broken? It’s okay.
God is the best physician.
He is the great healer of hearts.
This world can be cruel and there is a lot going on every day. Let it go…
Remember what Jesus said?
'Come to me, all
who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,
and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest
for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”'
Matthew 11:28-30
He didn’t say it was going to be easy. But He did say He would be with us. I know,
this isn’t what you wanted to hear and wouldn’t make a great bumper sticker or
a mug saying.
“come suffer with
Me”
But honestly, that is what Christ asks us to do. Deny ourselves and follow Him. Yes, there are many blessings on this earth. Some
days are better than others, but the gospel shows in the book of Acts that many
of the apostles suffered greatly for Christ.
When we are personally suffering, we need to trust Him in all the
moments. He will get us through the
trial. He will be with us in the
trial. He will stay with us no matter
what…
In the meantime, we can trust Him and we have each other -
to hold each other’s arms up.

his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. '
Matthew 16:24-25
'As long as Moses
held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his
hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a
stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands
up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till
sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. '
